What is squib load?

A squib load is a type of ammunition malfunction that occurs when a firearm cartridge does not have enough gunpowder or propellant to fully discharge the bullet from the barrel. This can result in the bullet becoming stuck in the barrel, causing a potential hazard if another round is fired behind it.

Squib loads can be caused by a variety of factors, including improper loading of the cartridge, degraded gunpowder, or a malfunctioning primer. It is important for shooters to be aware of the signs of a squib load, such as a noticeably quieter shot, reduced recoil, or a bullet that does not hit the target.

Firing subsequent rounds without clearing a squib load can result in a dangerous situation known as a "barrel obstruction," which can cause the barrel to bulge or even explode. For this reason, it is crucial for shooters to stop firing immediately if they suspect a squib load and safely clear the barrel before continuing to shoot.

To prevent squib loads, shooters should always use properly manufactured ammunition, follow loading instructions carefully, and regularly inspect their firearms for any signs of malfunction.
